Where is Pickworth?
Pickworth is a south Lincolshire village about 9 miles east of Grantham and a similar distance south of Sleaford. It is in the administrative district of South Kesteven, and has a population of about 200.
Like many other villages, Pickworth is experiencing rapid and profound change. Set in agricultural surroundings, few of its people now have any direct connection with farming, and nearly all the agricultural land in the parish is worked by farms based in other villages.
VILLAGE NEWS AND COMING EVENTS >
Village Meeting AGM
31 villagers (including the Committee) attended the meeting on April 23rd.
Officers and Gentlemen
The current Village Meeting Committee was re-elected unopposed, with Matthew Desorgher as Chair, Gill Wade as Secretary and Flood Coordinator, Sarah Catchpole as Treasurer and Mark Tucker as Village Green Manager.
Jenny Seddon stood down as Chair of the Pickworth Welfare Society and nominated Ian Roberts to take over as her successor; this was approved unanimously. We wish Ian the best of luck and ask all of you to support him as you have supported Jenny in the past!
Good News
We have been informed that Pickworth roads will be re-dressed in the coming financial year - a very welcome initiative!
The Village phone box will remain in service in Pickworth, due to our poor mobile phone reception.
Pickworth Village Meeting funds are in good condition; a 2010/11 precept of £500 will be applied for, to build both our strategic funds for the future and a stronger community.
There is a possibility that we can apply for grant funding to develop the pond adjacent to the Village Green. Additionally, work parties will be formed to help in this project (‘Many hands make light work’ again!) to keep the Village ‘wild at heart’.
The last year has also been good, with regard to flooding (or lack of!). Who was the mystery drain clearer active on Mill Lane? Well done, and thanks for all your hard work!
David Cox gave an entertaining review of the activity of the 150 Club. There was overwhelming support for the proposal to continue fund raising in this way and we are sure that David will be in touch with you, very soon!
An interim meeting of the Village Meeting was proposed and approved, to keep all villagers better informed and up to date on the activities of the first rung of our democratic representatives (a ‘cheese and whine’ evening). More news to follow closer to the expected date in October.
The Pickworth Press will continue to be published as a self funding newsletter and events calendar. There were many kind offers of sponsorship and support from a number of villagers who were keen to see the Pickworth Press continue. A new Editor and production team will have to be identified when Geoff Cook and Jill Trail leave the Village, later in the year.
Ian Roberts and Matthew Desorgher have agreed to develop an overall Village Communication Strategy proposal to encompass all aspects of information emanating from the Village Meeting, the Pickworth Welfare Society and St Andrew’s Church. Village Green events and projects will also be featured. Information will be published in the Pickworth Press, the Village Website, ad-hoc emails and on the Village Notice Boards.
Pickworth residents and visitors are asked to show a little more consideration in a number of areas: Avoiding riding horses on Public Footpaths, lighting garden fires, ensuring that dogs do not foul our paths and verges, and parking carefully when attending Village Hall events.
We also need to take pride in our Village, by generally keeping things neat and tidy, cleaning Village signs and removing unsightly litter. A little effort will reap huge rewards. Many thanks to those who have already helped.
A Further Initiative
A successful investment project to improve the quality of broadband services in Rutland villages will be discussed, and a plan developed for Pickworth. Watch this space!
